Offseason Review Series: Day 9: The Denver Broncos

Denver Broncos

Division: AFC BWest

Hello and welcome to the Denver Broncos Offseason Review Series post. I, /u/blindmanbaldwin, will be your guide on this expedition.

I was a doubter in the idea of a “Super Bowl Hangover”. I thought that was a myth. Like Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, or the Avs winning. However, the 2016 season made me (and probably the rest of Broncos Country) believers in the phenomena. I don’t need to recap the season but the team just didn’t seem to have the same fire and heart they did in 2015. Maybe that was because of no Peyton. Maybe that was because they got to the top and there’s nowhere to go but down. Maybe it was because the offense was never able to find an identity (even in ‘15 they had an identity of being trash until the 4th quarter/OT than PFM would pull some bs out of a hat and we’d win). Maybe it was because guys like Brandon Marshall, Derek Wolfe, and Demaryius Thomas were never truly healthy.

Likely, it was some aggregate of these parts. Regardless, the Broncos went 9-7 with the lone bright spot being a fantastic defense. But that’s the past, it’s time to look to the future. With the retirement of long-time Bronco Gary Kubiak and the departure of fan favorite DC Wade Phillips, it’s time for a new generation of Broncos coaches to rise.

But before we get to that, here’s a few things from the 2016 Broncos that may or may not be known (likely because no one wants to know them)

  • The 2016 Broncos had a PD of 36. 2015 Broncos was only 23 points higher at 59.

  • The 2016 Broncos had the 22nd ranked offense by points, 3rd lowest in team history (behind 1971 and 2011 Broncos)

  • They finished with the lowest ranked offense by yards in team history (27)

A few thoughts before we start:

First a shout out to Pro-Football-Reference for having literally everything I could ever need in terms of football stats.

Also a shout out to /u/skepticismsurvival for organizing this great project

And a shout out to you all for making the /r/nfl community a (mostly) great place.

Hopefully in this coming season, the Broncos don't have a repeat in this game

Here's the series hub

With that out of the way, let's begin!
